Advice from Peter Pan on Creating a Great Work Place

I was driving to Orlando earlier in the week with my truck and my ipod on cruise control as a song I often skip over came on. It was I "I Won't Grow Up" from Peter Pan and for some reason at the time a lot of the lyrics sounded like great advice when it comes to thinking about work atmosphere.

"Listen to your teacher. Repeat after me:
I won't grow up,

I don't want to go to school.
Just to learn to be a parrot,
And recite a silly rule.

I don't want to wear a tie.

And a serious expression
In the middle of July.
And if it means I must prepare
To shoulder burdens with a worried air"

'll never grow up, never grow up, never grow up
Not me.

To me, the parrot line really rings true in terms of not wanting to work at a place that posts a vision and core values on the wall but in terms of actually living those values is hollow to the core.
If you have Gen X & Gen Ys on your team this is really important, they already live by this part of the song.

The second part really made me think about how we allow minutia and petty details drive us insane and prevent us from really enjoying our job. Your deadline is not the end of the world, relax. Business doesn't have to = Serious work.

I'm going to try to be a little more like Peter Pan, the boy who never grew up.

Try to imagine what our world, the business world would look like through his eyes. Based on that thought how can we change it, make it more fun, make it more like Never-Never-Land?

What would Peter Pan meetings be like?
What would Peter Pan conferences be like?
What would his office look like?
