Despite all the attention given to creativity and innovation in the media the topic is still widely misunderstood. Often when people ask me what I do I'll say, "we help organization create more ideas, better ideas and processes to evaluate and act on their ideas. It seems to baffle people. If they say anything they'll say, "How can you make people more creative?"
Discovery Channel's The Deadliest Catch highlights what has been deemed the most dangerous job in the world, being a crab fisherman on the Bering Sea. On each crab boat on the show there are always a few Greenhorns, or rookie crab fishermen. As you'd expect everything they do takes longer than what it would take one of one of the old hands on deck. Usually they are also the ones that nearly get themselves and/or others killed because they're not as aware. They are ridiculed by the more experience fishermen for being slow, dumb and not up for the task.
Learning how to be creative, creating a workplace that is more conducive to creativity and evaluating ideas effectively is no different than being a crab fisherman.
It is a learned skill.
It takes practice.
The more time you spend on the boat, the more time you spend putting your ideas out there, dropping gear in the water, putting yourself at risk, the more you practice creating them, catching them, harvesting them and ultimately bringing them to market the better you become.
So what we do, what Catch Your Limit does, is take organizations filled with Greenhorn Thinkers and helps them become a fast working experienced crew that fills their pots and makes it home safely or more simply, an organization that is able to catch their limit.
