A good friend of mine owns a potbellied pig named Baby-J and was visited by the lovely representatives from the code enforcement office that he was violating a Tallahassee ordinance by having his piggy. They informed him that he must get rid of the pig or the City of Tallahassee would do so for him.
They found out about his pig because a neighbor's dog bit someone for a second time and the owner of the dog complained that the reason for the dog's aggression was a result of being tempted by the living bacon that is Baby-J. The city ordinance the prevents my friend from keeping a pig in the city was enacted in 1903 and was meant for livestock. As pot-bellied pigs from Vietnam became typical, well not typical but not that weird, the law was never changed.
So code enforcement stopped by to see this pig that was causing dogs to bite humans and informed my friend he'd have to get rid of it. I should also mentioned this pig is neutered and house trained. The truth is he'd never survive on a farm, he's a city pig. Now my friend must face the tough decision of parting with a beloved pet or defying city officials.
Is it really America if the city can simply come into your home and take away your pig? How can they really expect someone to just give up an animal their cherish? It isn't as if the pig ever bothered anyone. In truth the rest of the neighbors love the pig. The pig even receives invitations to community social events.
Please write to whomever you think can help. Baby-J needs your support...Baby-J is a treasure, a loved member of a family, not just some walking pork chop.
